Four functions of the mechanical engineer, common to all branches of mechanical engineering are:
- the understanding of and dealing with the bases dynamics, concerning the relation between forces and motion,
- the sequence of research, design, and development,
- production of products and power, which embraces planning, operation, and maintenance, and
- the coordinating function of the mechanical engineer, including management, consulting, and, in some cases, marketing.
