The Students of Color Conference (SOCC) is designed to strengthen awareness and knowledge within the context of social identity development, enhance skills that enable students to become more active proponents of their own education and life choices, and expand the opportunities and possibilities for students to become agents of change.

Students learn critical thinking skills, develop networks of support, are exposed to diverse approaches to learning, and use cultural knowledge as a foundation for educational practice.

The goal of the conference is to provide a fun, educational experience that promotes leadership, diversity, and academic success.  It is also important to us that we provide a safe environment for each participant. So the following is a summary of expectations for a successful conference.

The number of conference attendees is strictly limited. The application process is competitive, and screening committee will determine student representatives. An "alternate" list is generated for remaining students.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Maintain a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA (unofficial transcript required)
  • Meet classroom requirements (instructor verified)
  • Available to attend entire conference, if selected - (Thursday through Saturday) April 6-8, 2017

The application/selection process is:

If selected to attend, students must:

  • Provide a $30 cash deposit by March 24, 2017, which will be returned to you upon departure
  • Attend one pre-conference workshop presented by the Diversity Center
  • Attend the mandatory pre-conference orientation
