Bates commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with celebration and march to Tacoma Dome

TACOMA, Wash. -  Bates Technical College will highlight service, leadership and responsibility at its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The event will be held Friday, Jan. 13, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the college's Downtown Campus Auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Avenue in Tacoma. 

The celebration will feature community advocates who will share what service and community means to them. Speakers include Tacoma City Council member Victoria Woodards; community organizer and an executive at United Parcel Service Frank Boykin; and Executive Director of The Evergreen State College, Tacoma campus, Dr. Artee Young, who will provide the keynote address. 

A tradition for the college and as part of the celebration, Bates students, staff and members of the community will march to the Tacoma Dome on Monday, Jan. 16 from the Downtown Campus on 11th Street and Yakima Avenue to the Dome to attend the City of Tacoma's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event. 

The march begins with refreshments at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. Participants will begin marching at 9:30 a.m., in time to reach the Dome for the community celebration at 11 a.m. A shuttle will be available to return marchers to the Downtown Campus after the celebration.
