English language school will bring international students to Pierce County, boost economy

TACOMA, Wash. - ELS Educational Services, the largest network of campus-based English language education institutions in the world, will open a center at Bates Technical College's Downtown Campus on Sept. 17, 2012.

The second institution to open in Washington state, and the only one worldwide to be hosted on a technical college campus, ELS Language Centers has the potential to attract hundreds of international students to the Tacoma area, according to Tamarra Jeu-Harris, district director for ELS Language Centers.

"ELS Educational Services and Bates Technical College have come together in partnership to expand language training to our international community, both to those here in Pierce County and to potential students located in countries abroad," said Dr. Ron Langrell, president of Bates Technical College.

Langrell believes this cooperation could provide a local economic boost. "Studying English as their second language in a work-based learning environment provides numerous advantages to local and visiting students, area employers, and to our culturally rich region," said Langrell. "Language learners will have the added ability to continue their study in high-demand associate degree or certificate programs at Bates," he said.

ELS students are conditionally enrolled in the college's career education programs, and will have access to college food services, child care center and libraries. The students will also have an option of living in apartment-style dormitories at the Court 17 Apartments on Market Street in downtown Tacoma, or live with a host family.
