Bates celebrates graduates at commencement ceremony

Friday, May 11

TACOMA, Wash. -Bates Technical College will honor and celebrate its graduates at the commencement ceremony held in the exhibition hall of the Tacoma Dome on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m.

Frank Boykin Jr., an active community member who serves on the University Place Planning Commission, and is the enterprise accounts manager at United Parcel Service, will deliver the keynote address, and Marketing and Business Management graduate Tammy Chalmers will serve as student speaker at the ceremony.

Chalmers was twice laid off in the last four years because of the down economy. She chose to pursue a degree from Bates because it would make her more competitive in the job market. Originally from Coos Bay, Ore., Chalmers moved to Tacoma in 2006. She is currently working at a large firm in Renton, and will graduate with an associate of applied science-transfer degree.

Annually, more than 800 students complete their education at Bates and leave to begin careers throughout the year. On Friday evening, approximately 200 graduates will return to celebrate their educational achievements and participate in the ceremony.
