Completion of General Education requirements for degrees and certificates complements a student’s industry specific skills training. General Education courses develop competence in communications, computation and human relations that students will need in the workplace and broader community for professional and personal growth and development. They also provide a foundation for a student's future educational efforts. The transferability of General Education credits earned at Bates Technical College is subject to the policies of the receiving institution. GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Degrees and certificates in Career Education Programs at Bates Technical College require General Education courses. Requirements vary depending on the program area, the credential, and the track a student chooses to pursue. A student completes general education requirements by progressing in three competency pathways:
- English/ Communications
- Mathematics/ Computation
- Human Relation/Social Science
- Some degree programs require humanities courses
- Some certificates have the option of Applied Integrated Problem Solving courses
Most students complete their General Education requirements by taking courses at Bates Technical College. Students who have completed General Education courses at another accredited college can request to transfer credits to Bates Technical College by providing the Registrar with an official transcript and requesting a transfer evaluation.
Students may also complete General Education requirements by receiving transfer credits based upon an evaluation of courses taken while in military service or by passing recognized post-secondary equivalency exams such as DANTES, CLEP, or Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) in a relevant subject area.
It is important for students to plan ahead to take General Education courses. Planning ensures meeting requirements for a degree or certificate while also completing their industry-specific skills competencies. The Assessment Center refers students to faculty and advising staff to help students select and enroll.
