Biomedical Service Technician: Industry and Resources

Job Summary: Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMET) are responsible for maintaining, adjusting, calibrating, and repairing electromechanical and hydraulic medical and patient evaluation/care equipment. Biomedical Job Study

Job Tasks/Essential Functions: Maintain/repair medical devices including ECG monitors, blood pressure monitor, telemetry systems, infusion pumps, ventilators, defibrillators, voice-controlled operating tables, electric wheelchairs, radiological and laboratory equipment, CAT scanners, and ultra-sound equipment.

  • Must adhere to stringent medical and safety standards. 
  • Majority of the work is scheduled and includes preventative maintenance as well as corrective maintenance
  • Conduct product evaluations and make purchasing recommendations
  • Install new equipment
  • Occasional in-service education provision
  • Coordination of service contracts
  • Manage assets and investigate device-related incidents
  • Complete all required paperwork and documentation

Tools, Equipment, Work/Safety Aids: Multimeters, specialized software and computers designed to communicate with specific pieces of hardware, specialized tools to simulate water and air pressure, hand tools, soldering irons, electronic tools to repair and adjust equipment, circuit boards, and logs to monitor the equipment and completed work.

Knowledge/Skill/Education Requirements: Must be able to address technical challenges and be capable of communicating with those from other healthcare disciplines in a facility. The technician is required to have a high school diploma or equivalent and usually has an Associate’s degree. They receive on the job training and complete manufacturer training classes. Ongoing education and training is required once hired. BMET’s must be able to understand blueprints, electrical schematic drawings as well as electrical, hydraulic and electromechanical systems.
