Diversity supports the mission of Bates Technical College. Respecting and promoting diversity is vital to the education of our students and to the learning environment of our campus community. We foster an atmosphere where each of us is valued for our intellectual and cultural perspectives, increasing our ability to reflect critically and resolve challenges. We share a wealth of experiences that strengthens us individually and as a society. As students and educators, we commit to building a diverse and engaged community.
In 2011, the college adopted a Leadership Document on Diversity, to outline ways to incorporate diversity throughout the college.
Diversity Center Services and Resources
The Diversity Center is a hub for the campus community and is accessible to students, staff and community members. The center, located at the Downtown Campus, offers a welcoming and comfortable place to meet, and is a safe place to learn, where conversations and discussions can occur within an atmosphere of respect and trust.
The Diversity Center includes a large conference room and smaller meeting rooms and spaces for conversation and meetings. Computer workstations, a library stocked with a plenty of diversity-related resources and a small kitchen area add to the space.
Diversity Center Activities
The Diversity Center celebrates, promotes and plans various activities and events throughout the year. The four main events include Disability Awareness Day in October; Veterans Day in November; Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a March to the Tacoma Dome in January; and Global Heritage in June. Bates recognizes additional heritage months throughout the year. Be sure to check out the college calendar for these and other events. Check out photos from past events.
