Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment
The mission of the assessment and curriculum department is to assist faculty and staff in developing processes to establish a clear educational philosophy; it provides an articulation of what students should know and be able to do and supports faculty in how to achieve these goals.
Assessment and curriculum development is an ongoing, multi-step process for planning and implementing a high quality instructional program. It:
- defines program goals and expected learning outcomes;
- creates a framework that provides a way to evaluate and improve student learning;
- provides information that can be used to determine whether or not intended outcomes are being achieved; and
- uses a variety of methods of assessment to measure student learning.
Additionally, the staff in the assessment and curriculum development department assist faculty in the creation and documentation of the following:
- program outcomes for all career training programs
- master course outlines for all courses at the college
- course/program syllabi
- course/program/department assessment plans

A new curriculum revision policy regarding major changes is effective July 1 for all courses and programs. Major changes may only be made once a year. (Major changes are those changes that affect the curriculum guide (course/program titles, course/program credit totals, course numbers, etc.)
Each program has a curriculum guide that is the college's contract with the SBCTC, and once it is advertised in the catalog or on the website, it then becomes a contract with the students. Frequent changes (even those that appear to be minor) cause problems for students, registration, contracts with other agencies, and federal financial aid. Therefore, any major changes being considered need to have the appropriate curriculum revision documents submitted and approved by June 1 to allow for the July enrollment for fall quarter.
While the curriculum guide is the official document that defines what we are offering, the delivery model and MCOs are internal documents that define how we are delivering what we said we would. If a change needs to be made to the sequence of the delivery model or the contact hours, those are considered minor changes and can be made during the school year.
