Database management and database development careers are a segment of the fast growing and ever-changing information technology (IT) field. Entry level positions are traditionally found in database development. Individuals with some IT background and/or specific industry certifications may be suited for database management positions.
Database developers are computer programmers who, much like software developers, have acquired the skills to create desktop and web software applications that utilize information stored in large database systems. Their skills are specialized to include specific database development tools.
Database managers, commonly referred to as DBAs, are specifically trained in skills for administering enterprise and web-based database management systems. These skills include installation, configuration management, security, monitoring and tuning, backup and recovery, and troubleshooting.
