Apparel Construction & Patternmaking Technology prepares students to enter the fashion manufacturing industry to work as patternmakers, CAD operators and technical designers. They work in quality control, off-shore production, manufacturing, retail, international trade and sourcing. |
 Students learn industry standard sewing construction, tailoring, flat patternmaking, drafting and draping while exploring a variety of traditional techniques. They use computer-aided design (CAD) to digitize patterns into the system, make pattern adjustments and to apply their pattern and grading skills to the Gerber CAD system and complete markers that are used as cut layouts for thousands of garments in a range of sizes. The cutters use the layouts to cut a wide variety of garments, including skirts, jeans, slacks, knitwear coats, suits, and bridal wear. |
Patternmakers are an integral part of the fashion industry. It is the apparel patternmakers who create the ‘blueprint’ or pattern pieces for garment designs. The classroom provides professional equipment and a professional environment where students nurture creative skills and bring their fashion ideas to life.
Each student has the use of an industrial lockstitch machine. Other classroom equipment includes industrial sergers, blind hemmers and a cover-stitch machine. Acquiring technical skills is definitely the key to a successful career in this line of work. |
 Graduates have been employed by Bratwear, Eddie Bauer, Guess, Nike, Nordstrom Design, R.E.I., and Tommy Bahama, as well as other local and out-of-state manufacturers.
