Foundation Announces Approval of Strategic Plan

2008-20013

BUILDING THE FUTURE ONE STUDENT AT A TIME

The Bates Technical College Foundation was established as a 501c3 organization in 1992 and incorporated on July 16, 1993.  The mission of the Bates Technical College is to attract and provide resources through community partnerships to serve the College and its students.

In order to help realize our mission and purpose, we must have a roadmap.  To that end, the board held a retreat in February 2008 to identify strengths, weaknesses and our top funding priorities for the future.  The Foundation be a key participant in helping the college achieve its mission, vision and goals.

At our retreat, the Foundation Board re-affirmed its commitment and belief in scholarships for students as well as support for faculty and staff.  The Foundation also realizes the need to engage alumni and to develop an alumni relations program. To that end, the Board of Directors approved an ambitious 5-year strategic plan in June 2008 which directly aligns with our mission to attract and provide resources to serve the College.  Over the next five years, the Bates Technical College Foundation will work toward accomplishing these goals:

GOAL #1

Support the college in achieving its vision.

Objective 1:     Increase scholarship support to students.

1.1.1        Increase scholarship support to students from $50,000/year to over $90,000/year by the end of 2013.

1.1.2        Raise $250,000 in endowed scholarships.

1.1.3        Raise $1.5 million for the Henry T. Schatz Endowed Scholarship, a scholarship which serves 10 career-training programs.

1.1.4        Provide funding for the College’s first study abroad pilot project for a group of students and faculty beginning in 2008-2009.

Objective 2:     Increase support to faculty and employees.

1.2.1    Increase mini-grants from $10,000 to $25,000 in 2008-2009.  Award $40,000 in mini-grants by the end of 2013.

1.2.2    Continue to fund the Exceptional Faculty Award endowment until it reaches a value of $90,000+ by the end of 2013.

Objective 3:    Help advance the college through the strategic planning and fundraising for capital projects or other identified needs.

1.3.1    Raise $250,000 to be used towards the construction of a fire services tower at South Campus.

GOAL #2

Create life-long relationships with alumni of Bates Technical College.

Objective 1: Create a dynamic and active alumni association which helps set the tone and direction of alumni affairs.

Objective 2:  Develop effective communication with alumni and offer alumni opportunities to re-connect with Bates Technical College.

Foundation Announced First Exceptional Faculty Award Recipient

The Bates Technical College Foundation has chosen boat building instructor Chuck Graydon as the college’s first recipient of the Exceptional Faculty Award.  Graydon will receive $1,000 toward professional development activities.  The award recognizes exemplary work performance, positive impact on students, a professional commitment, and other contributions to the college.

Students credit Graydon with being a transformer, a master teacher, and as having a deep concern and desire to keep abreast of the most current industry needs.  Graydon has served as curriculum committee chair and is a member of the instructor tenure committee.

Graydon grew up on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.  He built his first boat at the age of 10, and has been building them ever since.  He spent his teenage summers scraping, sanding and painting yachts in Honolulu shipyards, then made a transition to residential carpentry and architectural woodworking.  He then spent ten years working on luxury yacht and fishing boat yards, with a boat always in some stage of construction in his garage.  Graydon’s craftsmanship has inspired Bates students in two arts that go hand in hand: fine woodworking and boat building.

The Exceptional Faculty Awards program was created in 1990 by the Washington State legislature to recognize and encourage excellence in our community and technical colleges.  The Bates Technical College Foundation established our Exceptional Faculty endowed trust fund in 2007.  It is funded through gifts to the foundation that are matched by the State Board for Community & Technical Colleges.  The endowment is currently valued at over $50,000 and will help provide for awards in the future in perpetuity.  Congratulations, Chuck!
