Students prepare for careers as Licensed Practical Nurses in a variety of healthcare settings. Clinical activities are an integral part of this program which is approved by the Washington Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission. During the Clinical Phase, students demonstrate nursing competencies under supervision at clinical sites and improve skills by working with a healthcare professional in a preceptorship role. Graduates are required to pass the Washington State Practical Nursing licensing exam to practice as Licensed Practical Nurses in Washington State. Prior to licensing exam, applicant will need to provide proof of high school graduation or equivalent.
Prospective students must attend an orientation held at the Downtown Campus, every first and third Thursday at 2 p.m.
Program Hours Monday through Thursday: 7 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Friday: 7 - 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday hours may vary depending on the instruction of the clinical facility.
Pre-requisites Prior to entrance into the Practical Nursing program, applicants must:
1. Pass a clear Washington State Patrol criminal background check. (Go to www.mybackgroundcheck.com; call the Practical Nursing program for the code, 253.680.7316.)
2. Obtain medical and dental clearance.
3. Provide documentary evidence of current immunizations, medical insurance (illness and injury), Health Care Provider CPR. (Contact Continuing Education at 253.680.7402 for current First Aid/CPR course schedule.)
4. Possess a current unencumbered, active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license or proof of completion of a CNA Skills Set training. (Contact Continuing Education at 253.680.7300/7029 for information on CNA classes.)
5. Possess current liability insurance coverage in the amount of $1 million for the LPN/LVN student.
6. Provide transcripts showing completion (grade C or above) of five quarter-credits or three semester-credits each of (1) college-level math, (2) English composition, (3) human relations, humanities or social studies, and (4) Biology 118 or higher in which Human Anatomy and Physiology are included.
7. Provide a Certificate of Completion for HIV/AIDS training (minimum of seven hours).
