Candidate Physical Ability Testing

Collection of Fire Service Graphics

Welcome to the Bates Technical College Fire Service Training-CPAT web site.  Our mission is to provide physically qualified firefighter candidates, utilizing the correct application of all components of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the International
Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).  Our program is designed and maintained to meet the guidelines set forth by the IAFF and IAFC.  BTC-CPAT issues certificates of completion to all candidates that successfully complete our CPAT.

CPAT Information

The CPAT was developed by the Fire Service Joint Labor and Management Wellness and Fitness Initiative Task Force, which was composed of members from the IAFF, IAFC, ten (10) Fire Departments and Locals (Unions) from across the US and Canada.

The test is designed to identify individuals who have the physical abilities to perform the duties of a firefighter. (Review CPAT preparation material.)

The test consists of eight (8) separate job related tasks that are performed in a continuous sequence.  10 minutes and 20 seconds are allowed for all eight (8) tasks.  THIS IS A PASS/FAIL TEST.
