The cooperative preschool program is a parent/child participation program. Parents enroll in the Bates Technical College parent education program, and enroll their child(ren) in the cooperative preschool of their choice. Parents assist in the classroom on a rotational basis as part of the laboratory experience. On a monthly basis, they attend a parent education opportunity presented by the co-op preschool, Bates Technical College, or a community agency, as part of the lecture requirement. Parents also conduct the non-profit business of the preschool. While parents are enrolled in the Bates parent education program they earn college clock hours in a continuing education program.

Whole child development allows a child to grow physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually

The program is designed to:

  • Teach new concepts in science, math, language, music and art
  • Provide opportunities for language development
  • Support a child’s self-esteem
  • Develop social skills
  • Provide new experiences and an awareness of their community
  • Provide children with individualized attention and support as they acquire and strengthen new skills.

Home & Family Life instructors from Bates Technical College provide the cooperative preschools with teacher and leadership training, parent education seminars, technical assistance, information and support. Parents enrolled in affiliated cooperative preschools have access to many parenting resources on the College campus. The cooperative preschool programs provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children ages 2–5.
