Career Information for Dental Assisting

Nature of Work:

A dental assistant works directly with a dentist to improve the quality of health care services. Dental assistants help dentists with a variety of tasks as well as working directly with patients. Assistants take x-rays, show patients correct oral health techniques, place dental dam on teeth to isolate for treatment and use suction to keep area dry during procedures. In addition, dental assistants sterilize equipment, set up trays and perform laboratory procedures.

Working Conditions:

Dental assistants work in a clean, professional environment. Their work area is at the dental chair where they arrange instruments and materials and provide patient care. Dental assistants must wear masks, gloves, eyewear and protective clothing to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases. The dental assistant may be required to sit for long periods of time depending on the length of the procedure. Some light lifting may be required.

Almost all jobs for dental assistants are in offices of dentists. Other jobs might include educational services as well as health care facilities.
