From new industry partnerships, special training programs, new funding for expansions and initiatives, there's always something exciting happening at Bates.  Students, staff and faculty members are involved in many community projects.  Legislators and other policy makers visit our campuses regularly.  Additionally, several area events are hosted by or held at Bates.  All of our recent news items are listed here.


Oct 26   Lackman to serve as Bates acting president
The Bates Technical College Board of Trustees recently appointed Vickie Lackman as acting president of the college, effective Oct. 23. She will serve as the college’s president until the board appoints an interim president later this year.

Oct 26   Bates offers combined basic and advanced fiber optic technician course
Bates will soon offer a combined basic and advanced fiber optic technician course. Participants can earn two levels of certification, Basic Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) and Advanced Fiber Optics Technician (AFOT), in three days of training. Tuition is $665 and classes are Nov. 3-5 and Jan. 12-14.

Oct 12   Bates celebrates 5th annual Disability Awareness Day
On Thursday, Oct. 15 at 11:30 a.m. Bates Technical College will celebrate Disability Awareness Day with a presentation from Paralympian Mark Wellman in the auditorium of the downtown campus, 1101 S. Yakima Ave.

Oct 5   Bates seeks interim president
The Board of Trustees of Bates Technical College is now accepting applications for the position of Interim President of the college. The President is the chief executive office of the College and reports to the Board of Trustees.

Sep 4   KBTC airs re-mastered Sherlock Holmes
A monarch blackmailed. A villain pursued. A mysterious corpse discovered. Whatever the adventure, Sherlock Holmes will take you on an entertaining ride with each episode. Let KBTC reintroduce you to literature’s most famous detective in its newly digitized and re-mastered format.

Sep 3   Bates offers ESL course in Fife
For many non-native English speakers, simple communication can be challenging. Students can work to overcome the language barrier and increase their access to resources or jobs with Bates Technical College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) course. The ESL course meets at the Fife Community Center, 2111 54th Ave. E, room #3 in Fife, Mondays and Wednesdays, 9-11:30 a.m., Sept. 14 – Nov. 18.

Aug 31   Bates para-educator program receives accolades
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) recognized Bates’ para-educator program as the only public two-year college in the state to offer the entire series of courses through distance learning.

Aug 25   Bates Foundation announces scholarship recipients
Scholarships play an important role in offsetting education costs, especially in today’s down economy. This fall, 26 Bates Technical College students will receive scholarships totaling $13,670 from the Bates Foundation to help close the funding gap.

Aug 12   Bates appoints executive director, general manager of KBTC
Bates Technical College President Dr. David Borofsky recently announced the appointment of David Hinman as executive director and general manager of KBTC, the college’s public television station.

Aug 10   Qualified prospective nursing students can tackle pre-requisites at Bates
If you’ve thought about a career in nursing but can’t find a way to tackle all of the pre-requisites, Bates Technical College can help. Beginning fall quarter, Bates will offer Introduction to Allied Health Careers, a specialized program for qualified prospective nursing students that packages all required pre-requisites into two quarters of course work. Classes begin Sept. 21.

Aug 7   Bates appoints director of communications and marketing
Bates Technical College President Dr. David Borofsky recently announced the appointment of Edie Jeffers as director of communications and marketing. Jeffers accepted the position effective July 1, replacing interim director of communications and marketing Marilyn Strickland.

Aug 5   Bates vice president for student services accepted to WELA
The Washington Executive Leadership Academy (WELA) has accepted Dr. Ivan Gorne, vice president of student services at Bates Technical College, into its 2009-2010 class. WELA is a one-year program for Washington’s community and technical college system leadership staff.

Aug 5   Bates Board of Trustees elect officers for coming year
At its July 28 meeting, the Bates Technical College board of trustees elected Stanley J. Rumbaugh as board chair and Theresa Pan-Hosley as vice chair for the 2009–2010 academic year.

Jul 14   Bates unveils afternoon high school program
Beginning in the fall quarter, Bates will launch its new afternoon technical high school program, which will allow students to start their school day at noon and end by 6 p.m. Students enrolled in the afternoon high school program will begin with three hours of academics and conclude with three hours of a career education program.

Jul 10   Pinning ceremony to be held for practical nursing graduates
Summer quarter graduates of the Bates Technical College practical nursing program will hold a pinning ceremony on July 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the college’s downtown campus auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Ave., Tacoma.

Jul 1   Bates President announces resignation
Bates Technical College President Dr. David Borofsky announced today that he will resign from his post effective Dec. 31, 2009, to pursue other opportunities. He has served as the college’s president for the past five years.

Jun 24   KBTC Public Television Wins Two Emmy Awards for Documentary
KBTC Public Television's weekly documentary series, Full Focus, won two Emmy awards, the highest honor in television, from this year’s Northwest Regional Emmy Awards held on May 30 in Snoqualmie.

Jun 10   Bates' Culinary Arts Introduces Fine Dining Experience
Bates Technical College’s Culinary Arts career program announces the opening of its student-run fine dining service beginning Tuesday, June 16 at the downtown campus, 1101 S. Yakima Avenue, Tacoma. Open to the general public, the dining room is located across from the cafeteria in the Cascade Room and is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

May 29   Bates Faculty Receive Distinguished Award
Two Bates Technical College instructors received the 2009 Washington Association of Vocational Education (WAVE) Educator of the Year award during a ceremony last week at the college’s downtown campus.

May 22   Bates Embraces Diversity in Community Celebration
Students and staff of Bates Technical College invite the community to celebrate the 14th annual Global Heritage Celebration on Friday, June 5 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am in the auditorium of the college’s South Campus, 2201 S. 78th Street in Tacoma.
