TACOMA, WA  Two Bates Technical College instructors received the 2009 Washington Association of Vocational Education (WAVE) Educator of the Year award during a ceremony last week at the college’s downtown campus.

Art Cutting, instructor for the Biomedical Service Technician and the Electronic Equipment Service Technician programs, has been employed at the college for over 16 years.  “Art has demonstrated a strong commitment to the college, and is a worthy recipient of this award based on his success as a teacher, and his ability to adapt his program to serve the needs of the students,” says Cheri Loiland, vice president for instruction.

Student Peter Bago says, “Art is a teacher that anyone would be lucky to have.”

“Since entering the biomedical program last September, Art has made learning fun and a great experience.  His teaching method brings out the best in the students,” says student Charlie Johnson.

Academic instructor Judith Lilly is known for inspiring students to succeed.  “Her ability to create industry rich, relevant assignments has changed learning,” says Loiland.  “Students who previously were put off by academics are now looking forward to communications and math assignments.  Judith sets a high standard, then helps the students to achieve at levels they previously didn’t think possible.  She has created excitement about learning.”

Says Lilly, “When I teach a lesson, I don’t only teach content, structure, construction or discipline of a concept, I teach the music behind the lesson.  So when students do their lessons, they hear the ‘music.’  This concept produces ease in immediate proficiency and retention of the concept.  Most important, it is the key to their falling in love with academics, and the beginning of their hunger to become lifelong learners.”

The WAVE educator award is administered by Washington State’s Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board and recognizes individuals who exhibit outstanding knowledge, expertise, and exceptional achievement in their field, and who create an exceptional learning environment for students.
