TACOMA, Wash. – In Washington State, more than 20,000 para-educators work with teachers in school districts. They teach life skills, offer academic assistance, supervise the playground and more. And each year more than 350 people get their necessary training through Bates Technical College’s para-educator distance learning courses.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) recognized Bates’ para-educator program as the only public two-year college in the state to offer the entire series of courses through distance learning. Douglas Gill, director of special education for OSPI, said offering the courses through distance learning “demonstrates the program’s continuing efforts to keep in the forefront of delivering high quality training using technology and keeping it affordable.”

The distance learning option keeps the program affordable and accessible, according to Carole Brewer, dean of Bates’ educator training center. “The online program   decreases barriers to professional development for para-educators, like transportation, cost or family obligations. OSPI’s recognition underscores the value of this program.”

Prospective and current para-educators can register for Bates’ 100-level professional development courses. Call 253.680.7161 or visit www.bates.ctc.edu/Paraeducator for information.
