TACOMA, Wash. – Scholarships play an important role in offsetting education costs, especially in today’s down economy. This fall, 26 Bates Technical College students will receive scholarships totaling $13,670 from the Bates Foundation to help close the funding gap.
“Many of our students find it difficult to juggle family obligations and education expenses,” said Kimberly Pleger, director of the foundation. “The Bates Technical College Foundation helps reduce the impact of college-related expenses, making it possible for students to continue their education.”
The foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, provides financial support to students and college programs. Its funding comes from fundraising efforts and equipment donations. All students are eligible to apply for the foundation’s general scholarships, and others who fit certain criteria can apply for a variety of program-specific scholarships.
Recipients in various career education programs may use the scholarships, which range from $150-$1,000 per student, to help pay for tuition, books and supplies. Students awarded the Associated Student Government Child Care Scholarship, offered for the first time this quarter, will receive $500 toward child care expenses at the college.
