TACOMA, Wash. – The Washington Executive Leadership Academy (WELA) has accepted Dr. Ivan Gorne, vice president of student services at Bates Technical College, into its 2009-2010 class. WELA is a one-year program for Washington’s community and technical college system leadership staff.
Involvement in WELA gives participants comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the community and technical college system and better understanding of the role of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC). With the skills participants acquire through the academy, they can become more effective leaders on campus and better advocates for their institution in the community, within the SBCTC system and to the legislature.
Gorne, a resident of Gig Harbor, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Pacific Lutheran University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Puget Sound. He came to Bates three years ago with more than 30 years of experience in education at both the administrative and teaching levels. Most recently, he served as the vice president for student services at Highline Community College and has held administrative positions at Southern Oregon University, Edmonds Community College and Central Washington University.
