Candidate Physical Ability Testing (CPAT)
Bates Technical College offers the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). The CPAT was developed by the Fire Service Joint Labor and Management Wellness and Fitness Initiative Task Force, which was composed of members from the IAFF, IAFC, ten (10) Fire Departments and Locals (Unions) from across the US and Canada.
The test is designed to identify individuals who have the physical abilities to perform the duties of a firefighter. It consists of eight (8) separate job related tasks that are performed in a continuous sequence. Ten minutes and 20 seconds are allowed for all eight (8) tasks. THIS IS A PASS/FAIL TEST.
Our program is designed and maintained to meet the guidelines set forth by the IAFF and IAFC. Bates issues certificates of completion to all candidates that successfully complete our CPAT.
The non-refundable testing fee is $119 per person. This includes the CPAT test and an orientation. You may waive your right to attend the orientation in writing.
All fees must be paid at the time your application is turned in. Payment can be made in the cashier's office by cash, credit/debit card, money order, or cashier's check. Make checks payable to BTC Fire Service Training.
Bates will issue a certificate of completion to all candidates who successfully complete the test. The certification is valid indefinitely. Contact the department that you are testing for to identify specific certification requirements. The certifications expire from 120 days to one year nationwide.
