Special Needs and Disability Office

The Special Needs/ Disability Office assists students with disabilities or special needs by providing appropriate and reasonable accommodations to all who qualify.  The Office works with individuals who have physical or learning disabilities, who are academically or economically disadvantaged, use English as their second language, are single parents, ex-offenders, displaced homemakers and those in nontraditional training.  When necessary, referrals are made to community agencies for additional services. A qualified disabled student:

  • has a physical, mental or sensory impairment that substantially limits one of more major life activities;
  • has a record of such an impairment, or:
  • is perceived to have such an impairment, or a student who has an abnormal condition that is medically cognizable/diagnosable.

Reasonable Accommodations Policy for Students with
Disabilities Under 504-ADA
On the basis of disability, no student will be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subject to discrimination under any college program or activity.  Bates is committed to providing qualified students with equal opportunity to access the benefits, rights, and privileges of college services, programs and activities in an integrated setting appropriate to the student's needs, and in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and state laws of 1994, chapter 105.

Accommodations:
In order to receive reasonable accommodations, a student with a disability must contact the Special Needs/ Disability Office as early as possible, following this process:
a)  Make an appointment with the Special Needs/ Disability Office at the Downtown Campus, main building, 253.680.7013.
b)  Bring full written professional documentation of your disability to your first meeting and request accommodations.
c)  When eligibility is established and accommodations outlined in a Letter of Accommodation, present the letter to each instructor prior to the beginning of class.  Discussing accommodations with each instructor is your responsibility and ensures successful program completion.

Services:
Services provided to qualified disabled students may include:  accessible parking, mobility assistance, access to adaptive equipment, test accommodations, interpreters, scribes, class notes, materials in alternative formats, tutoring, and registration assistance.

Grievances:
Disabled students who have grievances with Bates Technical College staff or faculty regarding disability-related issues should consider contacting the Special Needs/Disabled Student Coordinator to obtain a copy of the Grievance Procedure.

Special Transportation: 
Bates is accessible to students with a physical disability through the Pierce Transit shuttle service.   Contact the Special Needs/ Disability Office for information, 253.680.7013.

Course Substitutions, Waivers:
Bates does not substitute courses or waive course requirements which will alter essential program requirements. The college considers requests for course substitutions or waivers according to procedures outlined in the Policies and Procedures Regarding Reasonable Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Under 504-ADA.  The procedure is located in the Special Needs/ Disability Office, Downtown.
