Teacher Preparation and Certification

Teacher Preparation Courses for
Career and Technical Education and
Professional-Technical Education Certification

An Overview

Bates Educator Training Center offers training that prepares individuals with business and industry experience for the following teaching careers.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) at the Secondary Level, Grades 9-12

Bates is approved by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to offer a business and industry route to CTE teacher certification. How do you qualify to begin training as a CTE teacher? You must have 6,000 hours of paid occupational experience in the career or technical field in which you want to teach.

Professional-Technical Education (P-TE) at the Post-Secondary Level

Bates faculty are required to take 6 of the 12 teacher preparation courses to receive P-TE certification at the post-secondary level, at no cost to the employee. P-TE certification is a legal requirement and a condition of employment for most faculty members at Bates Technical College. Human Resources determines initial eligibility for certification prior to an employee’s hire date.

The quality, competency-based training is flexible making it easier for you to maintain jobs and family responsibilities while moving through the program. Courses are offered quarterly; weeknights, weekends; and some are offered via distance learning. An accelerated summer weekday offering provides an opportunity to complete the majority of your courses during the summer. You design your own plan to meet your individual needs.

We offer three different types of instructional delivery formats for the teacher preparation courses:

  • Classroom: The instruction is presented in a traditional face-to-face setting.
  • Online: The instruction is presented online using the Blackboard delivery system and the internet. These courses require a login ID and password. When the course starts, you will receive directions about how to login to your course. Some online courses require a minimal amount of face-to-face meeting time. Check the class schedule for required meeting dates.
  • Videobased: The instruction is presented on DVD or videotape and all course materials are mailed to you.  You’ll then have three months to complete the course.
